The Traditional Saga features a thorough introduction of Spencerian writing and decorative certificate techniques known as Engrossing. The instruction and activities are conducted in an historical context throughout the week, with hundreds of original penmanship specimens for the participant to study.

For the Traditional Saga program, no previous experience or skill-level is required. If a person has never held a pen but has an interest to learn – this program is for you!

Engrossing Spencerian Saga Workshop Dates

The Engrossing Spencerian Saga focuses instruction on the vintage techniques of lettering, ornamentation, use of gold, layout and design that were emolyed a century ago to create magnificent certificates of recognition. Instruction will focus on the topics of layout, design, letterforms, use of gold leaf, and the numerous techniques of ornamentation. Many historical and contemporary examples will be available for study; an extensive set of handouts will be provided for each student.

The Engrossing Saga is a very unique program, that is only offered once every 5 years. Persons of all skill levels are welcome. The supplies for this program are listed in detail in the Engrossing Saga literature. For individuals who enjoy ornamental penmanship, calligraphy and the art of decorated letters, borders and backgrounds this workshop offers an adventure in using all these pen art tehcniques in a manner that defined the best aspects of human recognition. A variety of student projects are included throughout the week-long schedule.

Advanced Spencerian Workshop Dates
October 16 – 22, 2011

The Advanced Spencerian Saga continues the instruction of the Traditional Saga, but at a higher level. More involved writing techniques, fancier letterforms, elaborate flourishing patterns, learning how to design with penmanship and understanding the best use of decorative embellishing are presented in a manner involving student projects.

To gain the most benefit from this program, persons who wish to attend should already have at least a familiarity and/or beginner's degree of skill in any form of ornamental penmanship, whether it be Spencerian, Copperplate or decorative writing. A new, special set of practice exercises and projects will be featured this year, both in ornate letters and in decorative Off-Hand Flourishing.

We are extremely excited about the programs we have planned for this year, and hope that you will be able to join us for a visit back in time to America's Golden Age of Penmanship. Together we will study the techniques of the past, be inspired by the legendary Master Penmen, and carry on the tradition and skill from a bygone era. We can't wait to meet you in person.

Accommodations
*The standard fee for accomodations is $550.00. Rooms are a double occupancy with a very limited number of single rooms available. Participants must register separately with Michael Sull for the program and with Andrea Bushweiler (440-466-8668) for accomodations.
